Making Ubuntu 8.04 work with the HP Thin Client t574x

The network chipset provided by this Thin Client is a BCM 57780 which is not supported by default by Ubuntu 8.04.

In order to change that you can download a more recent driver for the Tigon3 either from the Broadcom Web site (110g at time of writing) at http://www.broadcom.com/support/ethernet_nic/netlink_k57.php or previous versions as preserved on the HP site at ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib2/software1/pubsw-linux/p122860230/

To make compatible drivers for the Ubuntu kernel, the best approach is to create a chroot of Ubuntu 8.04 to have a clean install env.
You can use debootstrap for that. As the project Lead of project-builder.org, I used my rpmbootstrap command through pb which did that for me:

$ pb -p pb -m ubuntu-8.04-i386 newve
Project: pb
Action: newve
Creating the debootstrap VE for ubuntu-8.04 (i386)... OK

HP Pavilion dv6-2190us Entertainment Notebook PC

I recently got the opportunity to test installations of

- Fedora 13,
- openSUSE 11.3 (RC2), and
- Ubuntu 10.04

on an HP Pavillion dv6-2190us Entertainment Notebook PC. A brief summary of some hardware specifications follows:

- BIOS : F.17
- CPU : Intel Core i7-720QM processor 1.60GHz with Turbo Boost Technology
- RAM : 4GB DDR3 System Memory
- Video : Nvidia GeForce GT 230M
- Network : Realtek RTL8111/8168B
- Wireless : Broadcom 4347

Overall, the laptop was easy to install and use with these Linux distributions.

Installing Ubuntu Lucid on Envy 15

I recently got a USB 3.0 equipped Envy 15 laptop with Core i7 processor and installed 64-bit version of Ubuntu Lucid on it. My experience installing and running Ubuntu Lucid on Envy 15 was good for the most part. Hardware specs for the laptop are below:

  • Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-720QM Quad Core processor (1.6GHz, 6MB L3 Cache) with Turbo Boost up to 2.8 GHz
  • 4 GB RAM
  • ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5830 Graphics
  • NEC uPD720200 USB 3.0 controller
  • BIOS ver: F.28

Installing Debian Squeeze on Envy 15

I installed Debian Squeeze on a USB 3.0 equipped Envy 15 laptop with Core i7 processor. This blog details my experience installing and running Debian Squeeze. Keep in mind Debian Squeeze is not released yet and is still changing at a good pace (I tried installing Debian Lenny just for the sake of it and graphic install fails to display anything on the screen. When I pressed ESC, it drops to text mode install but install kernel either panics or hangs. I did not spend much time on it). Hardware specs for the laptop are:

  • Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-720QM Quad Core processor (1.6GHz, 6MB L3 Cache) with Turbo Boost up to 2.8 GHz
  • 4 GB RAM
  • ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5830 Graphics
  • NEC uPD720200 USB 3.0 controller
  • BIOS ver: F.28
